A Report on Abigail’s Characteristics on “The Crucible”
The main characters are Abigail, Mercy, Proctor, Hale, and Elizabeth. Abigail is a woman who accuses many individuals of witchcraft including Elizabeth. When Elizabeth is implicated of witchcraft, she creates evidence that Abigail accused her as a trick to get ahead in life. Although Abigail and the girls start the tragedy, duty lies with the entire Salem community.
Although Abigail was practically an adult, she still basicly acted like a child, to be seen however not to be heard I think. This was the mindset in the whole town for children.
I believe Abigail’s most fascinating function is that she can lie through thick and thin I think. At the end of Act 1 Abigail lied by stating “I danced for the Devil, I saw him; I composed in his book; I return to Jesus; I kiss His hand” (Page 49) due to the fact that she wished to conserve herself. The point is Abigail doesn’t care to who she is lying. It could be a judge and even Proctor it truly didn’t make distinction to her as long as she was able to save herself.
The method long times she lies was quite amusing. In Act 1 Abigail believed there was a bird on the ceiling and it was doing an excellent job; she made believe each else that were there.”However God made my face; you can not want to tear my face. Envy is a fatal sin, Mary.”(Page 115) The reason Abigail did this again was to make everybody believe that she was a psycho. Abigail was able often times to effect the court she said “I have naught to alter, sir. She lies”(Page 103). She was able to have her methods with Danforth and Jugde Hathrone and the court (but lot of times court asked the question who had the power).
I believe Abigail has numerous split characters. In act 1; Abigail goes threw lots of psychological changes and moods. Abigail goes from violent to “peace keeping” when she holds Grace back. Then Abigail goes to quiet then mad. Then Abigail goes to flirt with Proctor. I found out that Abigail made lots of dangers to individuals but never ever went threw with them. Like when Betty was sleeping for a long period of time, Abigail would threaten her stating “Get up or I’ll beat you Betty”(Page 19)
Even though there are many issues in this story, the main problems are individuals being accused of witchcraft. The most spoken about event is when Abigail accuses Elizabeth Proctor of witchcraft. The only reason that Abigail implicates Elizabeth of witchcraft is due to the fact that she wishes to get her out of the way so that she can pursue her husband. Abigail states that Elizabeth”s soul came and stabbed her with a pin in the stomach.
In conclusion, in the book, everybody in Salem wanted the entire tragedy to end, but one method or an other, nearly everybody with in the community had a method of making the tragedy continue longer than it needed to be I believe.
