The Bundren family reside on their farm in Yoknapatawpha County, a fictional rural county in Mississippi. They are extremely bad, and the clan matriarch, Addie Bundren, is nearing death. Cash, the oldest son of the household, is a carpenter. As a last gift to his mom, he makes a coffin for her outside the window of the room where she lies dying. Anse, the family’s stupid and weak patriarch, sends two kids, Darl and Jewel, on a lumber shipping task that will net the household a couple of extra dollars. Darl and Jewel set off, Darl knowing that it implies he will not be present for his mom’s death. Midtrip, they have an accident, and are required to reverse; but Addie Bundren has actually currently passed away.
Money completes the coffin and they hold a funeral service. Darl and Jewel triggered once again. Dewey Dell, the only girl of the household, nurses her own tricks: she is pregnant, and will look for an abortion in the area. Vardaman, the youngest kid, is traumatized badly by his mother’s death, and continues to confuse her with the fish he caught and killed earlier that same day. Darl and Gem return, and the family triggers to transfer the body to Jefferson. It was Addie’s longstanding wish to be buried amongst her birth household there.
Storms have made the journey challenging. The bridges are washed away, and after a night at Samson’s farm the Bundrens end up having to backtrack to find a fordable part of the river. The stink is ending up being more noticeable, and buzzards follow the wagon. The attempted crossing is dreadful: Money’s leg is broken, and he nearly drowns. The mules are killed. But Jewel handles to save the casket from drifting away downstream.
The Bundrens take shelter at Armstid’s farm. To purchase new mules, Anse offers Jewel’s horse behind Gem’s back. The smell of the body is becoming more powerful, and the household triggers in a rush.
In Mottson, Dewey Dell attempts unsuccessfully to find a druggist who will give her an abortion treatment. On the other hand, the household has difficulty with the constable, due to the terrible stench of the body, and the Bundrens buy cement to make a cast for Money’s leg.
The Bundrens seek shelter at the Gillespie farm. No longer able to stand what is occurring to the body, Darl sets fire to the barn in which the casket is housed. Gem handles to save the coffin, but the barn burns to the ground. Meanwhile, Cash’s leg is plainly seriously injured, and the cement cast has just made matters worse.
The next day, they show up in Jefferson and bury Addie. Since of arrangements made by his own household, Darl is captured and removed to a psychological institution in Jackson. Cash sees Peabody, the county doctor, who does the very best he can for the damage leg. Dewey Dell is deceived by a shop assistant, and winds up trading sex for a bogus abortion treatment. Anse, his better half just recently buried, discovers a new better half in the area. As the Bundrens are triggering to return house, he brings the lady out and presents her as his new bride.
