This paper "The Study of Seas and Oceans - Oceanography" is a perfect example of an essay on geography. Oceanography is mainly a marine science that deals with the study of the earth’s oceans and seas. Oceanography covers a wide range of topics that entails; ecosystem, an organism in marine life, currents waves and other geophysical fluids dynamics. Also, the early history of oceanography starts right from 71250 B.C; by this time people had very little knowledge about the ocean.Oceanography started at the beginning of the seventeenth century when the navigators had interest in making charts on the same by using more accurate techniques.

The navigator’s charts and maps indicated that the sea depth is approximately 400 meters among others. Due to that information, many scientists commence the oceanic study to enable them to know the main fact concerning that point. Most scholars did much in exploring the Pacific Ocean by carrying out the observation on the wind, currents and water temperature as they believed this could assist them in developing clear and concise points about the ocean. Therefore in their work, the navigators made different charts and maps with more information about the ocean.

The charts they made contained more precise work regarding the ocean; the drawings presented different types of currents and their flow, water life, depth and wind among others; this encouraged the scientists to do more research on various factors regarding the ocean hence the beginning of the oceanography in the seventeenth century.Charles Darwin a professional naturalist made a great contribution to marine biology and become famous due to his theories of evolution hence motivating the biologist to develop an interest in the marine study.

Charles managed to collect and study many marine organisms and this made him known among the scientists with the theory of coral reef formation and classification. During his collection of organisms, Darwin put together the organisms from deep water thus enabled him to estimate the ocean depth and the distribution of the animal population. He indicated that marine lives are not found beyond 300 meters depth in the oceans. Due to that, a number of scholars including Sir John Ross and Johannes Muller among others came on board to check on that fact.

However, Sir John carried out his study in the ocean and found that some worms and animals are found in the bottom of the ocean while the German scientist Muller examined the organisms microscopically. Apart from that, Victor Hansen studied the minute organisms and gave them the name; planktons in 1887. Though the sea was known as the reservoir for fish, edible molluscs and seaweeds, Charles Darwin made the scientists understand that there is more to be studied in the ocean hence the root of oceanography.

During world war two, Oceanography began to spread when the problems related to defence was to be solved within a very short time. At that time, there was a problem concerning safe landing, secured, Passage, ocean currents and waves prediction. These problems made the defence sector of the United States and its allies to employ scholars to help in carrying out basic research in the ocean. As a result, all the academicians were pulled to offer the research service to the nation. Also, the international geographical year program of 1957 to 1958 made the fifty-seven nations to come together and carry out the exploration of the sea floor.

Consequently, they were able to do many discoveries that entail; the new dimension to the branch of geology and geophysics among others. Therefore, it is a clear indication that world war two made many Scholars come together to help in finding the best possible ways in which the landing passage and prediction of waves could be made perfect through oceanography.ConclusionLastly, Oceanography is important as it allows the study of seas and oceans. As a matter of fact, the root of oceanography is understandable right from the discussion.

For instance, oceanography started at the beginning of the seventeenth century when the navigators had interest in making charts on the same by using more accurate techniques. Also, it began when Charles Darwin did great work on marine biology which attracted other scholars to commence their studies on the same. Lastly, it began during the Second World War when the United Nation soldiers needed people to do more studies on the seas and oceans. All the noted facts contributed to the root of oceanography.
