Detailed Analysis of Amazon.com Amazon.com. is a site owned and run by an American electronic commerce company by the name amazon.com. Inc. previously the site was known to be an online book store but eventually increased its diversity and started selling CDs, DVDs, software, toys, furniture, jewelleries, electronics, apparel, food, video games, and MP3 and video streaming and downloading. This paper aims at giving a detailed analysis of amazon.com. The most notable thing about the site is its white and clean design. The site has a blue background with a search bar in the form of a white background with a fade effect. The site also has a smaller navigation on the top, which has 4 elements: Today’s Deals, Help, 1 Promotion offer, and Gift Cards. It also has some great features such as people who bought this also bought... Figure 1: show a sample layout of the Amazon.com site The amazon.com site makes use of the structural element TABLE by the way they have set its border attribute to zero. This was achieved through: (). By doing this, they made sure that the table was invisible to the users. They divide the pages by placing the contents of a page in different cells of the table (Baun 99). This allows the page to be divided into different sections with elements of the site appearing on different parts of the site. One of the tools that are used on this site for content, structure, and management is the portal working place which is mostly advocated for by the fact that the site offers affordable services. In order to avoid there being technical issues that are associated with the compliance with JSR168, the site makes use of Java based portal products. This enables them to manage the content of the site, with relation to the widely changing nature of .NET applications especially those involving such sites. Another important thing that should be noted about this site is its taxonomy. Taxonomy refers to the process of classification of things in accordance to a predetermined system. In relation to websites, it will be important to note that taxonomy refers to the manner in which data are arranged into and subcategories. The taxonomy of this site is done in terms of topic. This can be seen in the way the data on the site are arranged in terms of issues, topics, and special interests. The main advantage that amazon.com gets from using this type of taxonomy is that it enables their clients to freely navigate through their data during the process of finding that which is relevant to them. It also enables users of the site relate to the content of the site to their topics. This is specifically very important in the process of book searching. Through these points it can be concluded that taxonomy has enabled amazon.com has been able to connect their clients to the things of their interest (Robinson 101). The choice of this type of arrangement makes it easy for the users to make use of the site making the site one of the most popular sites of its type. A number of ways in which Amazon.com is different from eBay are evident. For instance, unlike eBay, Amazon.com does not have actions. Someone spends less time listing on Amazon as compared to eBay. Amazon.com has also been noticed to have a more elaborate feedback system as compared to eBay. Scamming is more possible when someone is using eBay as compared to when a person is using Amazon.com. Cloud computing has been undeniably important to e-business. Amazon.com does not see cloud computing as only an advantage to their operations, but a necessity given the current competitive state of the industry. To amazon.com cloud computing has been important in lowering their capex and their opex. It also takes away the complexity of managing the site while at the same time allowing the users of the site to go global in a matter of just one minute. Therefore, it can be said that in the case of Amazon.com it has been a success driving power while at the same time making the site more seductive to its users (Godbole and Kahate 89). Their cloud computing is managed by their own cloud service provider by the name AWS. It carries out activities such as storage of their data, computing, and networking. By using their EC2 they are able to reduce the period of time required in obtaining and booting new server instances to a matter of just a few minutes. This enables the site to have quickly scale capacity both upwards and downwards, therefore taking care for the needs of the computing requirements. The system also enables the site to choose from three pricing structures. The pricing structures have their basis on the needs of the company, on the demand, and on spot instance. Another notable feature in the Amazon.com site is Auto scaling which allows them to automatically scale their EC2 capacity upward or downward depending on the definition. Auto scaling is very important to the site, especially because of the high rate in which there is variation in this site. The advantage of using auto scaling is that there are no extra costs attached to its use. The site also makes use of elastic load balancing. Elastic load balancing can automatically distribute application tariffs that into the Amazon.com EC2 instances. Through elastic load balancing the site is able to attain higher fault tolerance for applications that have less manual interventions. Applicable tariffs for load balancing makes more application zones available. The company is always charged every hour they make use of elastic load balancing. Another important feature than should not go unnoticed is the Amazon Workspace. The Amazon Workspace refers to a fully managed computing service in its cloud. It allows end users to access the resources that they need to access to the devices of their choice. This includes devices such as android tablets, iPad, PCs, and many others. One thing that is commonly asked is the manner in which Amazon.com stores the data that they use. This can simply be answered by the fact that all their cloud activities are taken care of by AWS. The amazon.com has a storage facility that is commonly referred to as the Amazon S3. In their activities, Amazon.com has given utmost importance to privacy and security. There have been speculations that their AWS has been a part of the government’s scheme of monitoring the activities of civilians in the United States of America and globally. However, by looking at the structure and security measure taken in the bid of securing data and information used in the site these speculations will remain to be just speculations. They are able to attain this by using Amazon glacier. Amazon glazier Amazon glacier enables the site to have durable and secure storage of data and information that are involved in the transactions that take place on the site. The use of Amazon glazier is made more beneficial because it offers backup of the data and information that it keeps. Looking at the structure and the design of the amazon.com site, someone can easily conclude that the design and structure were meant to make the site as user friendly as possible. This can be seen in the way using the site has proved to be one of the easiest. When compared to other sites such as eBay its ease of use was very outstanding. The other thing that makes the sites use of cloud computing outstanding is the security levels of their data banks and their networks just as shown in this paper. Work cited Baun, Christian.
