7 months into her period in the DA’s office, Morgenthau recommends Sotomayor to recruiters looking for lawyers to work pro bono for the Puerto Rican Legal Defense Fund (PRLDEF), eventually relabelled Latino Justice. Puerto Rican lawyers founded the organization in 1972 “to utilize their legal skills to challenge systemic discrimination against the Hispanic neighborhood” (233 ).

She is deeply moved and proud that they are “of [her] neighborhood” and also values that they benefit the bigger neighborhood (234 ).
