Othello

Brittney Shaffer Mr. Alex Perez ENC 1102 10 February, 2011 Manhood and Honor William Shakespeare, in his 1603 play, “Othello” shows a great deal of various emotions and themes. The one that genuinely captured my attention was Manhood and Honor and the resemblance in them from that century to ours. In between 1603 and 2011 manhood is still basically how much respect others have for you, and how extremely you are looked at. Honor is a well recognized term nowadays due to the military service men and women, firemens, police officers, and paramedics.

Nevertheless, instead of calling them respectable like at that time, their referred to now as hero’s, or life savers. Once learning more about Othello’s marriage, Iago calls upon Brabantio, Desdemona’s father, hoping that he may have the ability to stop this or a minimum of bid his daughters otherwise. Iago contacts us to him” Zounds sir, you’re robbed. For pity, put on your dress! Even now, now, extremely now, an old black ram is tupping your white ewe. Develop, occur! Awake the snorting people with the bell, or else the devil will make a grandshire of you. Develop, I say! (Shakespeare 1251) When saying this to any guy you are basically spitting on their face and informing them they are being disrespected by their own daughter. Nevertheless in this case Brabantio is senator, and makes him look even worse than any other man. In those times you had to request for a children hand in marriage or either she was informed who she would marry. Considering that she never ever told her daddy she was marrying it made Brabantio look as if his own child didn’t respect him, so why ought to anyone else. Given That Cassio is Othello’s first hand male, or lieutenant, Iago attempts to break his manhood and honor by getting him drunk.

Iago desires near to Othello to sabotage his marital relationship and believes if Cassio loses his honor, or regard, then he would become lieutenant and Othello’s right hand male. Iago breaks Cassio down by getting him drunk, but Cassio attempts to recuperate before he leaves by stating, “Do not believe, gentlemen, I am intoxicated. I can stand all right, and speak all right. Why very well then; you should not think then that I am drunk” (Shakespeare 1281). This quote in itself pretty much informs that Cassio is attempting to make himself look macho however soon loses himself in the alcohol. I think this is also used in our military today.

If you miss act or act out your rank could quickly be taken from you. Although in today’s military I extremely question it would be taken since of a battle however would definitely be taken if you were to stab a fellow soldier, which as we understand is what took place to Cassio. Iago now tries to break down Othello with jealousy and lies. “In sleep I heard him say, “sweet Desdemona, let us be wary, let us hide our love! “And then sir would he grip and wring my hand. Cry “sweet creature” and then kiss me hard.” (Shakespeare 1304) Iago is attempting to develop Othello’s jealously by feeding him little lies here and there.

Also Iago plants proof to appear Cassio and Desdemona are having an affair. Iago is playing Cassio, Roderigo, and Othello through the whole play. Othello’s jealousy got the very best of him which is exactly what Iago wanted. Consumed by jealousy, without his honor, he has ended up being the animal that the discriminative characters have explained him as being. However, when Cassio didn’t die and Roderigo did, Iago’s strategies started to collapse. Even as Othello was telling Desdemona that he was going to eliminate her she still plead that he had done no wrong.

She still believed that she brought him honor and manhood by respecting his desires and commands. As any man would, when a female was trying to say she didn’t cheat, Othello didn’t believe her and believed she was just trying to cover her whore-like ways. This made him even madder. Iago tries numerous times to manage his spouse towards completion of the play when she is informing everybody of what he did. “What are you mad? I charge you, get you home”,”Zounds, hold your peace”, “Be smart and get you home”. (Shakespeare 1342, 1343) At this moment in the play all of Iago’s plans are now back shooting on him and is just putting him in an even worse situation.

Given that his manhood is being questioned as she still continues to speak, Iago decides to cease her disrespecting him and stabs her. I believe that any male would act in a manner like this one, when his wife is telling more than need be he might slap or even push her out the door and into their house or at least their car to get house. Nevertheless I do think that in those days that is how whatever was dealt with by killing the person. As this play started off as a love story it turns into a catastrophe in the end. The play shows us how the centuries have changed guys for the better.

It also reveals that jealousy can and will get the best of you if you let it. I believe this play can be pictured in the 21st century as a normal teenage relationship, just without the killing and violence. And never forget a reputation in a man and woman is the instant jewel of their souls. Work Mentioned Blossom, Harold. Blossom’s Notes. Broomall, PA: Chelsea House Publishers. 1996. Print. Kennedy, X.
