In the play, The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, the primary character, John Proctor is sucked into the witchcraft trials, unable to save the town from their own hysteria, and save his track record. As John Proctor handles the witchcraft trials, and becomes more personally included, he develops into a character that much better understands the world and himself.

John proctor attained his goal by keeping an essential trick that led to the freedom of his partner Elizabeth Proctor, saved his credibility, and resulted in his death. It all starts with the dark past and hidden secret that Abigail and John Proctor have kept to each other. John Proctor has had an affair with Abigail, but it ends shortly after his better half, Elizabeth, tosses her out of his home. John overlooked the witch trials till his other half Elizabeth was implicated of witchcraft.

Throughout the trial, John spilled out the secret when he tried to encourage how much of an enemy Abigail was to conserve Elizabeth. Nevertheless, in Abigail’s vengeance, she turns to witchery in an attempt to force Proctor back in her heart and eliminate Elizabeth. That is why Betty weeps, “You did, you did! You consumed a charm to eliminate John Proctor’s other half! You drank an appeal to kill Goody Proctor” (Miller 18)! Out of anger at himself and anger at the court, he weeps with all his effort, “She thinks to dance with me on my better half’s tomb! And well she might, for I thought of her softly.

God help me, I starved, and there is a pledge in such sweat. But it is a whore’s vengeance, and you should see it; I set myself entire in your hands. I know you should see it now” (Miller 102).
