Knops Saran Knops Mrs. Cox English 10 4 September 2014 John Proctor– Awful Hero An awful hero Is a very favored person that struggles with a downfall which leads to their death. John Proctor Like lots of others Is an awful hero. Proctor Is an extremely respected man In Salem however he likewise has a couple of flaws that have shown him to be a tragic hero which are prideful, lustful, and well respected. Later on in the play The Crucible, Proctor realizes his flaws and tries to fix them however it is too late. Among Proctors awful defects is that he was prideful.

While Proctor remains in Prison, his partner Elizabeth attempts to persuade him to accept his innocents, however his pride gets in the way and he was hanged. One of the important things Proctor states to prove his pride fullness is, “l have admitted myself! Is there no excellent repentance but it be public? God does not require my name nailed upon the church! God sees my name; God understands how black my sins are! It is enough!” (Miller 142). This part in the play Is a great example revealing that John Proctor Is a terrible hero. The quote describes to us that he knows what he did incorrect, UT he Is likewise prideful about his name being messed up when that’s all he has.

Another example Is when Proctor said, “Because It Is my name! Since I can not have another In my life Due to the fact that I am unworthy the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have provided you my soul; leave me my name?” (Miller 143). Proctor realizes that he is trying to keep his name clean, so that his kids do not have to be Judged for it. Proctor finds it much easier to crave his name, then live and be Judged everywhere he goes. As an adult Proctor needed to make those decisions for the better which led to his death, however Proctor is prideful was among many.

A 2nd awful flaw that Proctor has is desire. Proctor lusts after his house servant while his spouse is sick. Abigail then mentions, “l understand how you clutched my back behind your home and sweated like a stallion whenever come near! Or did I dream that? Its she put me out, you can not pretend It were you. I saw your face when she put me out, and you liked me then and you do now!” (Miller 22). Ball specifies that she and Procter were together and that they had sensations for one another while Elizabeth was Ill. Proctors simply is one of his huge burdens in his life, but he understands his errors and confesses.

Procter then states, “Infant, I may think about you gently from time to time. But I will cut off my hand prior to I’ll ever grab you again. Wipe it out of mind. We never ever touched, Baby” (Miller 23). This quote is clear, Proctor realizes what he did incorrect and now trying to change. Proctor is trying to carry on however Baby is still in love with Proctor. Desire was one big one, but all of it comes together. Finally, Proctor is an awful hero because of how highly regarded he is in Salem. John Proctor was effectively understood in Salem.
