“The Crucible” Lust For Power
Thomas Jefferson when stated, “Power Is not appealing to pure minds”. This quote might fit in perfectly with the type of minds there remain in _ The Crucible. _ Pure minds do not desire power, which leads any reader to think that Abigail Williams does not have a pure mind. In the play she Is constantly telling on people getting them thrown In prison and hanged. Nevertheless, she Simply wanted the attention of a specific male that she liked with a burning passion. In Arthur Miller’s _ The Crucible _ Abigail Williams desire for rower causes mass hysteria In the town of Salem.
Salem is a small Puritan town in Massachusetts. The Puritan society felt that God is sovereign; Guy Is wicked, and absolutely nothing seeking power. Puritans believe that anything anybody says about somebody is true till proven false, “The people should be purged individually so that the community as a whole might be protected”(Miller 1223). For Example, Child was snitching on everyone but when she was called out, she rejected expressively. John Proctor’s wife fired Infant and when Rev Paris, Baby’s ether, asked about it, Infant retaliated by stating, “My name is great in the village!
I will not have It said my name Is soiled! Goody Proctor Is a gossiping phony,” (Miller 1221). A lot of the time people that get a taste of power typically turn greedy. They desire any person they do not like to disappear and anything they say to be carried out in an Immediate. Infant was getting greedy so she decided to get rid of the people that were on her bad side, “l saw Goody Hawkins, 80th, Gibber with the devil” (Miller 1235). It does not tater that these people were Innocent; the Judge thought Abigail and tossed the women in prison. All these squabbles appear to be celebrations seized upon by individuals in order to assert their rights in a generally overbearing society” (Bonnet). Baby took every opportunity she needed to get another person In Jail, practically every time the judge and her were together she was getting another person in difficulty. For example, Baby, in addition to the other women, was in the room while they were examining Betty, the sister that passed out In the woods. Nevertheless she was fabricating, and started yelling names in order to draw attention far from their selves.
Likewise while John had Mary Warren in the court space prepared to admit, Child ended up turning the tables and getting John thrown In prison after getting Mary Warren so frightened that she decided to not admit and change her mind in the middle of the court space. A continuous desire for power and a prevalent acquisitiveness make up for their low station. The girls desire power, power, and more power and will do anything to get it. The keep pushing for people to be tossed In Prison that have actually done them wrong In their mind.
However, all the women wanted to do was cast a couple of spells to get what they desire. When they get caught is when they begin getting everybody else in problem to conserve their own butts. Their low station Is what Is causing them to tell, they are insecure about being caught and hung that they get everybody that might tell on them or that they have a grudge versus such as Elizabeth. I en gills’ lust Tort power leaves no one honest. All of it started In ten Doglegging when hey got caught conjuring spells in the forest.
